Burnet baseball crushes Lampasas finale of three-game series to complete sweep
The Burnet High School baseball team annihilated Lampasas 10-2 April 6 to earn the series sweep, the Bulldogs’ first in District 24-4A.
The victory keeps Burnet atop of the district standings.
“Anytime you can defeat somebody three times is big,” head coach Russell Houston said.
The game was scoreless until the Badgers scored their two runs in the third inning. The Bulldogs immediately answered in the fourth to tie it at 2-2. Then Burnet went on a tear, scoring four in the fifth, three in the sixth and one in the seventh.
In all Burnet had 11 hits and didn’t commit an error. The Badgers committed four errors.
O’Hair had 3 RBIs off 3 hits, while Valdez had 2 RBIs, and Morrow had 1 RBI and 3 hits. Will Johnson had 2 hits.
“Tanner seems to come up with the big hits when there are a bunch of people on base,” Houston said. “When the top of the order gets on, the Nos. 4, 5 and 6 tend to be the guys for big hits.”
The other important aspect is that all three got their big hits with two outs, the coach added.
“Those tend to be the bigger hits,” he said. “Anytime you can extend the inning and score, it’s huge.”
Dash Denton pitched all seven innings, striking out six and scattering six hits.
“That was Dash’s first start,” Houston said. “We’re trying to do something different. He threw a lot of strikes early. He stayed out of trouble. He gave up two runs and gave them up early. When you do that, it’s a less stressful night.”
Houston was pleased with the way his players performed.
“Dash Denton pitched a complete game giving up 2 runs. Big hits by Gibby Valdez, Tanner O’hair and Trey Morrow. Great job today.”
Burnet welcomes Georgetown Gateway Tuesday, April 11, then travels there to finish the series Friday, April 14. Both games start at 7 p.m.
